Ruils At Home Superheroes
This summer, to raise vital funds, Ruils is taking part in the ‘At Home Superheroes’ challenge and we hope that you can join us!
What is the challenge?
‘At Home Superheroes’ is a choose your own challenge event created by Paralympian Sophia Warner and the Superhero Series. They normally run an accessible Superhero Tri at Dorney Lake in summer, but this year it has been cancelled due to Covid-19. In its place they are inviting people to come up with their own challenge which they can complete at home or in their neighbourhood. Walk, cycle, wheel, dance, jump….anything goes.
What do I have to do?
You can take on a challenge on your own or form a team of up to 3, from your household or virtually. They have suggested 20km as a possible distance to aim for, but feel free to choose any goal depending on your circumstances. The challenge can be completed any time between 15 June and 15 July. All entrants receive a race pack and access to a dedicated app so you can share your progress and photos with the whole superhero community if you wish. There will be a one hour programme about the challenge on Channel 4.
How will Ruils help?
This year will be a tough year for charities, so Ruils staff Alex & Sue will both be taking on the challenge with their children. We hope that some of you may be inspired to join them. Ruils will pay the £10 entry fee per person and we ask participants to try and raise £50 for Ruils. All funds raised will go towards our Sitting & Befriending service for disabled young people.
If you would like to take part, please email firstname.lastname@example.org who will get you registered and help you to set up a fundraising page.
Here are some FAQs from the organisers:
Who can enter the At Home Superheroes challenge?
Anyone can enter, as long as each solo entrant or at least one team member considers themselves to have any type of disability.
What is the challenge distance?
20km, which you can complete solo, or share among your teammates in any way you wish – or you can all do 20km each if you’re feeling up to it! We’ve set 20km as a guideline but feel free to do more or less. As long as you give it your all, you’ll be a Superhero in our eyes!
Where and how can we complete the challenge?
This is entirely up to you. All we ask is that you take sensible precautions and adhere to the Government social distancing guidelines. If your whole team is in one household you might decide to do the challenge all together or as a relay. For example, one of you might decide to walk 3km around the living room, another might wheel 5km in their wheelchair in the garden and the third may cycle 12km in the local park. As you can see, anything goes!
What if my teammates aren’t all in the same household?
We hope you’ll use the wonders of modern technology to stay in touch remotely and encourage and congratulate each other through your training and the challenge itself. You’ll also be given access to an app as part of your booking that will let you share photos and progress with your teammates and the wider Superhero community if you wish.
How long do we have to complete the challenge?
You have a whole calendar month from 15 June to 15 July 2020 in which to start and complete your 20km challenge. You can decide to complete it in one day or over a number of days if you wish. It’s all very flexible.
What do I get with my booking?
Each participant receives a super race pack with their entry that will include a super race number, medal, T-shirt and other goodies. You will also be given access to an app so you can record and share pictures of your progress. (Please note, the race pack will be sent to the booker’s address in your registration.)
How many members can I have on my team?
You can add as many as you like for just £10 each and they too will receive a super race pack! You can either add more members to your ‘Team of 3’ ticket by adding them to your basket in the ‘Merchandise’ section and providing their details when prompted OR you can buy a solo ticket for any additional teammates at a later date and simply fill in the ‘Superhero team name’ on the solo ticket when prompted so we know you’re taking part in the challenge together!
Can a Sidekick (buddy) assist me during the challenge?
Absolutely – a household member or an official carer is welcome to guide, push or simply accompany you around your chosen course, but don’t forget to stick within Government guidelines! Please note, only those who pay a £10 entry fee will receive a super race pack with medal and T-shirt.
Will the event be televised?
Yes! Channel 4 will be following some of our At Home Superheroes to bring us highlights from around the nation for a one-hour programme on 15 August. And you too could have a starring role! We’ll be sharing a portal where you can upload your action footage, which could be chosen for the celebratory montage to close the show, so get those smiles and Superhero costumes ready!
What should I wear?
Anything goes and masks, capes and pants over tights are positively encouraged! Please do personalise and make sure your race numbers are nice and visible for any challenge clips you’re happy to share – the more ‘Superhero-d up’ you are, the more likely you are to get your moment on TV so feel free to go all out!
